Advantage+ Shopping: When It Helps vs When It Hurts

By Affan Siddiqi, Founder, Psycomaths

Advantage+ Shopping campaigns hand most targeting and placement decisions to Meta's automation, which performs well for accounts with enough conversion volume and clean tracking to train on, and performs poorly for accounts without either. The campaign type isn't inherently good or bad. Whether it helps or quietly burns budget depends on whether the account feeding it has the signal to support full automation.

Automation needs volume to learn from

Advantage+ campaigns rely on Meta's system learning from conversion signal at a pace that requires meaningful weekly conversion volume. An account with too few conversions per week gives the automation too little to learn from, and performance stays inconsistent rather than improving over time.

Weak tracking makes automation worse, not more efficient

Automated systems optimize toward whatever signal they're given. If Pixel or CAPI tracking has gaps, Advantage+ optimizes toward incomplete or wrong data just as confidently as it would toward accurate data, which can actively steer spend in the wrong direction rather than simply underperforming.

Less manual control means less room to course-correct mid-flight

A manually structured campaign gives direct levers (specific audiences, specific placements) to adjust when something underperforms. Advantage+ gives fewer direct levers, so a correction usually means adjusting the creative mix, budget, or exclusions rather than the granular targeting changes a manual campaign allows.

The real decision is account readiness, not campaign preference

The question worth asking before choosing Advantage+ isn't whether it's a better campaign type in general. It's whether the specific account has the conversion volume and tracking quality to feed it well. An account that passes both checks often does better with Advantage+ than with manual structure; one that doesn't usually does worse.
