Changing Bid Strategy Mid-Campaign: The Real Cost
By Affan Siddiqi, Founder, Psycomaths
Changing an active ad set's bid strategy resets the delivery system's learning for that ad set, similar to a major budget change, since the system has to recalibrate how it pursues the new bidding goal. A bid strategy switch that seems like a minor setting change often carries the same real cost as rebuilding the ad set, which is why it's worth testing deliberately rather than adjusting reactively.
A bid strategy change resets learning, even without a budget change
Delivery optimization is built around pursuing a specific bidding goal. Changing that goal (switching from highest volume to a cost cap, for instance) means the system is now optimizing toward something different, which triggers a learning-phase-like reset even if nothing else about the ad set changed.
Reactive changes usually happen at the worst time
Bid strategy gets changed most often in response to a performance dip, which is exactly when an ad set can least afford another reset. A reactive switch compounds the original problem with a fresh learning period, often making the dip look worse before any real diagnosis has happened.
Test bid strategy on a new ad set, not a live one
Testing a different bid strategy on a duplicated or new ad set, run alongside the original rather than changing it directly, avoids resetting an ad set that was already working. This isolates whether the new strategy actually performs better without sacrificing the baseline.
Some bid strategies genuinely don't fit certain accounts
A cost cap or bid cap requires the account to have a realistic, data-backed sense of what a result should cost; without that, the cap can be set wrong in either direction and throttle delivery or overspend. Highest-volume strategies fit better for accounts still gathering that baseline data.
