DIY AI Chatbots vs a Built Automation

By Affan Siddiqi, Founder, Psycomaths

A DIY, off-the-shelf chatbot is genuinely enough for narrow, well-defined use cases (a basic FAQ, simple order lookups) where the store's actual information needs are simple and don't change often. A purpose-built automation makes more sense when the store needs specific integrations (real-time carrier tracking, cross-tool context, custom business logic) that a generic tool wasn't designed to handle out of the box.

DIY tools work well for genuinely simple, static needs

A store with straightforward, rarely changing questions (basic shipping policy, simple size charts, store hours for a physical location) can often get real value from an off-the-shelf tool without needing custom development, since the underlying information need doesn't require deep integration.

Custom integration needs expose the limits of off-the-shelf tools quickly

The moment a use case needs real-time data from a specific source (live carrier tracking, cross-platform context between Klaviyo and Gorgias, custom business rules around returns), a generic DIY tool's pre-built integrations often don't go deep enough, and the gap shows up as the automation giving wrong or outdated answers.

Cost comparison isn't just the subscription price

A DIY tool's lower upfront cost can be offset by the ongoing cost of wrong answers (support cleanup, customer frustration) if it's being asked to handle something beyond its real capability. A purpose-built automation costs more upfront but is scoped specifically to what the store actually needs, reducing that hidden cost.

Starting DIY and outgrowing it is a normal, reasonable path

Starting with a DIY tool to validate which automations are actually worth having, then building a custom solution once the real, specific needs are clear, is a reasonable sequence rather than a sign the DIY choice was wrong. The DIY stage can serve as real discovery for what the custom build actually needs to do.
