The Hook-Angle-Format Framework Behind Every Creative Test

By Affan Siddiqi, Founder, Psycomaths

The hook-angle-format framework isolates three separate variables in creative testing: the hook (the first few seconds or the headline that stops attention), the angle (the specific argument or reason to care), and the format (how the message is delivered visually, static versus video versus carousel). Testing one variable at a time, rather than changing everything about an ad at once, is what turns a creative refresh into something that actually teaches the account what's working, instead of just producing a new ad with an unknown reason for its result.

Why changing everything at once teaches nothing

An ad that swaps the hook, the angle, and the format simultaneously might perform differently, but there's no way to know which change actually mattered. The next creative round starts from the same guesswork, since nothing concrete was learned from the previous test.

Hook: what earns the first few seconds of attention

The hook is the opening line, image, or first moment of video that determines whether someone keeps watching or scrolling past. Testing hook variations while holding the angle and format constant isolates specifically what kind of opening actually earns attention for this audience and product.

Angle: the actual argument being made

The angle is the specific reason being given to care (a problem being solved, a social proof claim, a comparison, an emotional appeal). Two ads can share the same hook and format but make completely different angles, and isolating this variable reveals which argument resonates, independent of how it's packaged.

Format: how the message gets delivered visually

Format covers static versus video versus carousel, and within those, specific structural choices. Testing format while holding hook and angle constant shows whether the delivery mechanism itself matters for a given message, separate from whether the message is right in the first place.
