UGC vs Studio Static Ads: What Testing Shows

By Affan Siddiqi, Founder, Psycomaths

UGC-style static ads tend to perform better for products that benefit from social proof and authenticity, especially earlier in the funnel with a cold audience. Studio-shot static ads tend to perform better when product detail, quality, or craftsmanship is the actual selling point, and especially further down the funnel with an audience that already has some trust in the brand. Neither format wins universally, which is why the right call depends on the product and funnel stage, not a fixed preference.

UGC-style creative tends to win on trust and authenticity

A cold audience with no existing relationship to the brand often responds better to creative that looks like a real customer's experience, since it carries implicit social proof before any claim is even made. This tends to matter most at the top of funnel, where trust hasn't been established yet.

Studio static tends to win when the product detail is the pitch

Products where quality, craftsmanship, or specific visual detail is the actual reason to buy (material, texture, precise color, build quality) often convert better with clean, well-lit studio imagery that shows that detail clearly, which UGC-style footage frequently can't capture as well.

Funnel stage changes which format fits better

An audience further down the funnel, already familiar with the brand from a previous touch, often responds differently than a completely cold audience would to the same creative. UGC-style's authenticity advantage matters most where trust is the open question; studio static's clarity advantage matters more once trust is already somewhat established.

The honest answer is to test both against the specific product

Neither format has a universal edge strong enough to skip testing. Running both styles against the same product and audience, and reading the actual CTR and conversion data, is more reliable than defaulting to whichever style is more common in a given category.
