Why Ad Frequency Keeps Climbing

By Affan Siddiqi, Founder, Psycomaths

Ad frequency climbs when the same audience keeps seeing the same creative without enough new people entering the pool or enough new creative entering rotation to spread impressions further. The three real fixes are expanding the audience, adding fresh creative variants, or reducing budget relative to the audience's size, and the right one depends on which side of that balance is actually off.

Fix one: expand the audience feeding the ad set

If frequency is climbing because the audience itself is too small for the current spend level, broadening targeting or layering in a fresh lookalike gives the delivery system more people to reach before repeating impressions on the same group.

Fix two: add new creative into rotation

If the audience is a reasonable size but frequency is still climbing, the issue is usually too few creative variants running, which forces the same ad to repeat rather than rotating fresh impressions. Adding genuinely new creative, not a minor variation of the same one, spreads delivery and reduces repeat exposure.

Fix three: reduce budget relative to audience size

Sometimes the honest fix is that the current budget is simply too large for how many people are actually reachable in that audience. Trimming spend down to a level the audience can absorb without repeat-heavy delivery can restore healthier frequency without needing a bigger audience or more creative.

Identify which side is actually off before picking a fix

Applying the wrong fix wastes effort: adding creative to an audience-size problem doesn't solve it, and expanding an audience when creative variety is the real gap doesn't either. Checking reach alongside frequency (a shrinking reach points at audience, a flat reach with rising frequency points at creative) identifies which lever actually matters here.
