Why Your CPM Doubled Overnight

By Affan Siddiqi, Founder, Psycomaths

A sudden CPM increase usually traces back to one of four causes: more advertisers bidding for the same audience (seasonal or competitive), the account's own audience has narrowed or overlapped with itself, ad relevance has dropped, or Meta's auction dynamics shifted for reasons outside the account entirely. Diagnosing which one applies changes whether the right response is to wait, adjust targeting, or refresh creative.

Check whether the spike is account-specific or market-wide

The fastest first check is whether CPMs are rising across the whole account or isolated to one campaign or audience. A market-wide spike (common around major shopping seasons) usually means more advertisers competing for the same inventory, which tends to ease once the period passes rather than requiring a structural fix.

Audience overlap quietly inflates CPM

Running multiple ad sets that target overlapping audiences makes the account compete against itself in the auction, which drives up CPM without any external market change. This is one of the most common account-specific causes and is fixable by consolidating or clearly separating the overlapping audiences.

Falling relevance raises the price of the same impression

Meta's auction weighs predicted engagement and relevance alongside bid amount. If an ad's relevance has dropped (often alongside creative fatigue), the same bid now buys less favorable placement, which shows up as a higher effective CPM even though nothing about the targeting changed.

Not every CPM spike needs an immediate reaction

A genuinely temporary, market-wide CPM increase often resolves on its own, and reacting to it with a major structural change can cause more disruption than the spike itself. Distinguishing a temporary market shift from an account-specific, fixable cause is what determines whether action is actually needed.
