Why Lookalike Audiences Die After 90 Days

By Affan Siddiqi, Founder, Psycomaths

A lookalike audience's performance typically declines as its source data ages and as Meta's delivery system works through the most responsive portion of that lookalike pool first. By the time a lookalike has run for several months, the easiest conversions inside it are often already captured, leaving a less responsive remainder. The fix is building the next lookalike before the current one fades, not waiting for it to fail.

The source audience ages, even if nobody touches it

A lookalike built from a customer list or pixel event reflects who converted at the time it was built. As the brand's actual customer base shifts (new products, new price points, new channels), the original source audience stops representing who's actually converting now, and the lookalike built from it drifts out of date along with it.

Delivery finds the easiest wins first

Within a lookalike pool, Meta's delivery system naturally reaches the most responsive people first. As that early layer gets reached and either converts or doesn't, what's left is a harder remainder, which is part of why a lookalike that started strong often weakens over time even with the same source and settings.

Refreshing the source data matters more than rebuilding the same lookalike

Rebuilding an identical lookalike from the same stale source doesn't fix the underlying issue. Refreshing the source data first (an updated purchaser list, a tighter value-based audience, a recent high-intent event) before building the new lookalike is what actually restores performance.

Keep the next lookalike ready before the current one fades

Waiting until a lookalike visibly stops performing to build its replacement means running on a declining audience for however long that rebuild takes. Accounts that avoid this keep a rotation of 2 to 3 lookalike variants (different percentage tiers, different source events) validated and ready to scale into as the current one softens.
