Why Your Shopify Store Is Slow (and Why More Apps Isn't the Fix)
By Affan Siddiqi, Founder, Psycomaths
A slow Shopify store usually traces back to a small number of real, fixable causes: too many apps injecting their own scripts, unoptimized images, a theme doing more work than it needs to, or third-party scripts (tracking pixels, chat widgets, review apps) loading in a way that blocks the page. Installing another app specifically marketed as a speed fix rarely addresses any of these, and can make the problem worse by adding one more script to load.
App bloat is the most common real cause
Every installed app has the potential to add its own JavaScript, CSS, or tracking calls to every page load, whether the app is actively being used on that page or not. A store with a long list of installed apps, including ones barely used anymore, is often carrying real page-weight from apps that aren't providing enough value to justify the speed cost.
Images are usually the single biggest weight on the page
Product and lifestyle images that haven't been properly sized and compressed for the web are frequently the largest contributor to a slow page load, especially on product and collection pages with many images. This is one of the most fixable causes and one of the most commonly ignored.
Third-party scripts can block the page even when they're small
A tracking pixel, chat widget, or review app doesn't have to be large to slow a page down if it loads in a way that blocks the browser from rendering the rest of the page first. How a script loads, render-blocking versus deferred, often matters more than how big the script actually is.
A speed-focused app treats the symptom, not the cause
An app marketed specifically as a speed optimizer is adding more code to a store that may already be carrying too much code. Real speed fixes usually involve removing or consolidating what's already there (auditing and removing unused apps, properly compressing images, deferring non-critical scripts) rather than adding something new on top.
