When to Refresh Your Ad Creative
By Affan Siddiqi, Founder, Psycomaths
Creative fatigue is when an ad that was converting starts performing worse over time, not because the offer changed but because the audience has seen it too many times. The signs are specific (declining click-through rate, rising cost per acquisition at the same targeting, climbing frequency), and the fix is proactive testing, not waiting until performance has visibly dropped.
The specific signs, not a vague feeling
Creative fatigue shows up as a pattern, not a one-day dip. Click-through rate declining over consecutive days at stable targeting, cost per acquisition climbing while the audience and bid strategy haven't changed, and frequency (how many times the same person sees the ad) climbing past the point where new impressions are mostly reaching people who've already seen it. Any one of these alone can have other causes. Together, they point at fatigue.
Test one variable at a time
The reason a lot of creative refreshes don't actually fix anything is that they change everything at once: new hook, new angle, new format, new copy, all in one ad. If performance changes, there's no way to know which part mattered. Isolating one variable (hook, angle, or format) per test is what makes a creative refresh diagnostic instead of a guess.
Build creative per funnel stage
Top, middle, and bottom of funnel need different angles. An ad that works for someone who's never heard of the brand usually doesn't work the same way for someone who's already visited the site. Running the same creative at every stage is a common reason a refresh helps for a week and then performance drops again.
Have the next test ready before you need it
Waiting until an ad visibly dies to start building the replacement means running on fatigued creative for however long the new batch takes to produce. The accounts that avoid this keep a testing pipeline running continuously, so a new angle is already validated before the current one wears out.
