Why Is My ROAS Dropping?

By Affan Siddiqi, Founder, Psycomaths

A Meta Ads account's ROAS drops for one of five reasons: a tracking or signal problem, creative fatigue, a structural issue in the campaign setup, a bidding constraint, or a measurement gap that's misreporting what's actually happening. Fixing the wrong layer wastes budget and time, so the first step is finding which layer actually broke, not guessing.

Start with signal, not creative

Most accounts we review don't have a creative problem. They have a tracking problem that makes the account look like it has a creative problem. A broken Pixel call, a missing CAPI event, or a mismatched conversion event can make perfectly good creative look like it stopped working. Checking the Pixel, CAPI, and event match quality takes less time than rebuilding a creative library, and it rules out the most common false alarm first.

Creative fatigue is real, but it's not automatic

If signal checks out, the next place to look is creative. An ad that was converting can genuinely wear out as the same audience sees it too many times. But creative fatigue has specific signs, not a vague feeling that "the ads got worse." See the full breakdown in our creative fatigue guide.

Structure can quietly cap performance

Overlapping audiences, too many ad sets competing for the same budget, or a campaign structure built for a smaller budget than the account now has can all suppress ROAS without any single ad looking broken. This is a structural constraint, not a creative or tracking one, and it needs a different fix.

Bidding and measurement are the layers people skip

A bid strategy that made sense at a lower budget can fight against the account once spend scales up. And measurement itself can be the problem: if attribution windows or reporting settings changed, the ROAS number on the dashboard can be wrong even though the account's real performance hasn't moved. This is why we check all five layers in order, not just the obvious one.
